- Inspect the dunnage before each use. Do not use pieces that are split, cracked, severely damaged, excessively deteriorated, or otherwise unsuitable for the intended application.
- Select dunnage of appropriate size, quantity, and condition for the cargo being transported.
- Position dunnage on a stable, suitable surface and ensure it is properly aligned before placing cargo on it.
- Do not exceed the load-support capability of the dunnage or use damaged wood for heavy cargo.
- Use appropriate cargo-securement equipment in addition to dunnage when required to prevent cargo from shifting during transportation.
- Do not use dunnage as a substitute for required cargo securement devices.
- Keep hands and feet clear of pinch points when placing dunnage or positioning heavy cargo.
- Use appropriate lifting and handling equipment when moving heavy pieces of dunnage.
- Keep dunnage dry and protected from conditions that could cause excessive deterioration or contamination.
- Store on a stable, level surface when not in use.
- Wood grain, knots, color, and surface appearance may vary from one piece to another. Natural variations are normal for wood products.
- Follow applicable FMCSA cargo-securement requirements and trailer, cargo, and equipment manufacturer's instructions when transporting loads.
